In 1999, Rai began dating fellow Indian actor, Salman Khan. Salman is also well acclaimed producer and television personality. They had serious relationship for about two years and they announced their separation in 2001. She also revealed that she became the victim of several abuses from Khan when she was dating him. She also claimed their separation was because of his infidelity and indignity.
While Rai was on the set of Dhoom 2, she fell in love with Abhishek Bachchan. Abhishek Bachchan is also an actor and producer. He is also popular for being a playback singer. After being in love for few months, they announced their engagement on 14th of January 2007 and they finally got married on 20th of April 2007. She finally gave birth to her first child on 16th of November 2011 and they named her Aaradhya Bachchan.
After Rai's family settled at Mumbai, she got enrolled at Arya Vidya Mandir High School. Then she joined Jai Hind College and DG Ruparel College. When she was in her early teens, she also took classes on classical dance and music. As a child, she dreamed to have her career in medicine but because of her several unsuccessful attempts; she joined Raheja College of Arts and majored in architecture. Later she became more interested in modeling and she dropped out from there.

That year, she also appeared in the movie, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya where she was found playing the role of Ashi Kapoor. Her breakthrough role came in 1998 after she starred the role of Madhumitha in the Tamil movie, Jeans. Besides this movie, she is also known for her role in the movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Josh, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, and so on. Her net worth is said to be around $35m.
