urner started writing songs around the age of 15 using his bass guitar. A year later, Turner, along with his childhood friend Matt Helders, Andy Nicholson and Jamie Cook, decided to form a band. It was Cook who decided the name Arctic Monkeys for their act.
The band had its first gig on 13 June 2003, supporting The Sound at a local pub called The Grapes. They sang eight songs during their first live performance, three of them were covers and five new, self-composed pieces.
They self-released their first Extended Performance (EP) in May 2005 under the title Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys and subsequently signed to Domino Records, an independent recording company. Their first album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, released in January 2006 and went on to become the fastest-selling debut album in British music history.
This incident pushed Turner into stardom, turning him into one of the most popular crooners of the early 2000’s. Subsequent to the breakthrough, he went on to record an album with Miles Kane, James Ford and Owen Pallett. They named the band The Last Shadow Puppets and their album, The Age of the Understatement, was released on 21 April 2008. The album made it to number one in its first week. The last album that Turner has brought out with The Arctic Monkeys is Everything You’ve Come to Expect in 2016.
Throughout his career, Turner has had numerous affairs but he still remains firmly unmarried. He dated Johanna Bennett from 2005-2007, was with Alexa Chung from 2007-2011 and with Arielle Vandenberg from 2011-2014. Since May 2015, Taylor Bagley has been Turner's girlfriend.
Turner caused an uproar during the 2014 Brit Awards while collecting his band’s award for the Best Album category when he said that rock’n’roll would never die. With numerous popular albums under his belt and millions of fans all over the world, the net worth of this British crooner stands at $22 million.
