Tall and talented, Alexander was born as Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin in Moscow, Russia to Mikhail Ovechkin and Tatyana Ovechkina. Both of his parents are also a former sports person. He is a Russian national and is of Russian descent.

1988

Grabbed his first toy hockey stick

Alexander's interest in sports began at the age of 2. At the age of 2, while he was in a Soviet toy store he took a hockey stick and he hesitated to leave it there. He also used to run the 10th floor apartment on foot rather than taking the elevator.

1993

Joined the hockey school

He used to visit the soccer ground at a young age. As his interest in hockey was increasing, he attended hockey school when he was just 8. Though his parents hesitated to take his to the rink, his talent was discovered by the Ovechkin's coach and he pursued his parents to enroll ALex in hockey.

1995

His brother Sergei Ovechkin died

He had two siblings named Sergei Ovechkin and Mikhael Ovechkin. HIs older brother Sergei Ovechkin was the one who first introduced him to hockey and hockey school. Sergei Ovechkin died at a young age in a car accident. 

2001

Began playing with Dynamo Moscow

When he was 16, he joined Russian Superleague as a Dynamo Moscow player. He turned professional in 2001 and displayed some beautiful games for the next four years. In his first 21 games he scored four points.

Won the gold medal for the Junior National Team

He also had the successful career as an international player since a young age, he lead Russian Junior National Team wins the gold medal when he was just 16. He also scored two hat ticks in this tournament.

Won RSL title

As his talent was growing with the passage of time, he was drafted to the Washington Capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft but he stayed in Dynamo for one more season due to the 2004–05 NHL lockouts. During that year he also lead Dynamo win the RSL title.
