After years of rowing and powerlifting, Rusev decided to pursue his career as a wrestler. To be a professional wrestler, he moved to United Stated around 2005. He took his wrestling training at the Knox Pro Wrestling Academy. On 22nd of November 2008, he made his wrestling debut at the New Wave Pro Wrestling against Aerial Star and he won this debut match. In 2010, he became associated with independent promotion Vendetta Pro Wrestling and then in September 2010, he became the official member of the professional wrestling promotion World Wrestling Entertainment after he signed a contract with them. He began his training at Florida Championship Wrestling and he played his first televised wrestling match in 2011. Within few days, he had a serious injury as he tore anterior cruciate ligament and his meniscus. After six months of rest and rehabilitating, he was back to FCW in the early 2012. On 30th of May 2013, he made his NXT television debut in a battle royal but this match was claimed by Bo Dallas.
