Joel was engaged to Alexis in 2015. They made their engagement public by flaunting their matching engagement rings at the Cannes Film Festival. But the engagement didn't last for long. It is reported that Joel called off his engagement to the mother of one as he wanted to focus on his career more.
Joel, who is currently single says he is married to his work. He made the statement during an interview with GQ Australia. He said,
'I made a decision that I was just going to work my a*** off. To be honest, I haven’t changed that thought. I’m seriously married to work."

Joel attended the Nepean Drama School at the University of Western Sydney and did acting on several stage productions before stepping into the films. He has acted on Erskineville Kings, King Arthur, Ned Kelly, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and several others.
He won an AACTA Award in 2002 for the movie The Secret Life of Us which also featured Samuel Johnson, Deborah Mailman, and Spencer McLaren.
In 2015, he released self-directed, self-written, self-starred psychological horror-thriller movie The Gift. He was nominated for the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing – First-Time Feature Film for the film.

His latest movie Red Sparrow, co-starring Jennifer Lawrence, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Charlotte Rampling was released last February 15. The movie grossed $43.5 million.
