Occupationally she is an actor and director. She holds British nationality and English ethnicity. Knowing the fact that she is an adopted child, she was always eager to know about her real parents. In order to find them, she reached New York and eventually found her birth mother, a model for Biba in London during the swinging sixties. She also found out her biological father who was a half-Sierra Leonean poet and activist. Later she discovered that she has a sister also who is a year younger than her, also adopted in Britain. Her sister knew about their relationship when she was 16. Her sister has watched her in Grange Hill, with people saying 'you look like that girl on TV'. When they met for the first time, their similarities were unbelievable, she says "we talk the same, walk the same, even our actions are the same". Now they are very close.
Mealing was married to her husband; screenwriter Richard Sainsbury in 1998.The couple together has two sons- Otis and Milo. The family lives on a farm in Lincolnshire. The couple does not leave a chance of divorce. Mealing is a brave lady who was diagnosed with breast cancer, the day after she gave birth to her second son. After her successful recovery, she was asked to be the brand ambassador of charity, Breast Cancer Care in 2010. She later lost her close friend due to breast cancer since then she dedicated a JustGiving page to raise money in memory of her friend.
