Angela Evelyn Bassett, or simply Angela Bassett, is an American actress known for her portrayal of Tina Turner in the movie What's Love Got To do with It?
Angela Bassett was born to Daniel Benjamin Bassett and Betty Jane on August 16, 1958, in New York City. She is of American nationality and her ethnicity is Afro-American. 10 months after her birth, her mother was again pregnant with another daughter, Angela's sister, D'nette.
She was originally raised in Harlem, but after her parent's divorce, she moved from Winston-Salem, North Carolina to St. Petersburg, Florida, where she was raised solely by her mother.
In St Petersburg, she attended Jordan Park Elementary School and in 1970, she moved to Disston Middle School after her sixth grade. Again later, she was shifted to Azalea Middle School where she did her eighth and ninth grades. She then got enrolled at Boca Ciega High School, where she was also the cheerleader and became the first African-American from Boca Ciega to be enrolled in the National Honor Society.

Angela then attended Yale University, where she received her bachelor of arts degree in African-American studies in the year 1980. In 1983, she got her Master of Fine Arts from the same university. Recently in 2018, she was awarded an honorary doctoral degree in fine arts from Yale.
After her graduation, she began working in a beauty salon and also as a photo researcher. Meanwhile, she also looked for acting jobs at the New York theater. She made her first stage performance in 1985 at Second Stage Theater; she appeared as J. E. Franklin's Black Girl. She also performed in two other plays, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (1984) and Joe Turner's Come and Gone (1986) at the Yale Repertory Theatre.
Then in 1985, Angela made her first television appearance in the TV movie Doubletake where she played the role of a prostitute. Her debut in the films was as a news reporter for the movie F/X (1986). She then went on to act in the seminal anti-gang movie Boyz n the Hood (1991). A year later, she played the role of Katherine Jackson, the mother of the singing group Jackson Five in the 1992 film The Jacksons: An American Dream.
Bassett has portrayed the role of many strong female characters like Betty Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X, for the movie Malcolm-X, which also features Denzel Washington. She also made an outstanding role in the 1993 film What's Love Got To Do With It? where she plays the role of Tina Turner- her portrayal earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Angela has played in many superhit movies over the years. Her 2006's Akeelah and the Bee was a huge success. She has also played the role of rapper Christopher Wallace Jr., also known as Biggie Smalls's mother, in the 2009 biopic Notorious. Apart from these, she has also acted in Olympus Has Fallen, with actor Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman. Her recent movies are Black Panther(2018) and Mission Impossible — Fallout(2018).
She has made numerous appearances for episodes of TV shows like American Horror Story and American Horror Story: Freak Show. She has also appeared with her husband in His Girl Friday in 2005
Angela married husband and actor Courtney B. Vance on October 12, 1997. The duo met for the first in Yale. Together they share two kids, a son Slater Josiah Vance and a daughter Bronwyn Golden Vance. The twins, who were carried by a surrogate mother, were born on January 27, 2006.
Angela is currently 64 years of age and has a height of 1.63 m. As of 2022, her net worth is estimated to be about $25 million. A major source of her income comes from her career as an actress.
