Hanne Karin Blarke Bayer, also known as Anna Karina, is a Danish-French director, singer, actress, and writer. She was widely renowned as the French-Swiss director Jean-Luc Godard’s wife. She has also worked in various of his movies like A Woman IS A Woman (1961) and Vivre sa vie (1962).

In addition, she is also the winner of Silver Bear Award for Best actress for the film A Woman Is A Woman at Berlin Film Festival.

Early Life and Education

The Danish actress was born on September 22, 1940, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her father was a captain of a ship while the mother owned an apparel shop.

Anna’s father left the family after a year of her birth, and she lived with her grandmother until she was four.

For the next four years, she lived in foster care and returned to her mother’s place. Due to the lack of familial love, she describes her childhood as "terribly wanting to be loved."

At the age of 14, Karina played in a Danish short film by Ib Schmedes which got her a prize at Cannes Film Festival.

When she was 17, she arrived in Paris with the money given by her grandfather. An advertisement agency approached her to invite her to work as a model.

Likewise, she worked as a model and appeared in many magazines. During the time, she took a stage name, Anna Karina.

Jean-Luc Godard, a director, saw her work in an advertisement and approached her to work for him in the movie Le Petit Soldat in 1960. 

Following her debut, Karina played in various films such as The Stranger (1967), The Wedding Ring (1971), Rendezvous at Bray (1971), The Salzburg Connection (1972) and Bread and Chocolate (1973).

In 1972, she opened her production company Raska and made a debut as a director for Vivre ensemble (1973). Likewise, she directed, wrote and starred in the movie Victoria in 2008.

The Danish actress has her hands in music as well. She has given major hits like Sous le soleil exactement and Roller Girl. The two songs originally featured in Anna (1967), a musical comedy where she sang alongside Jean-Claude Brialy and Gainsbourg.

In addition, Karina released an album with Philippe Katerine, Une histoire d’amour and went on a musical tour. Likewise, she released a collection of songs from the album titled Chansons de films.

After the divorce with Godard, she got into a few more relationships. She married Pierre Fabre, a French actor (m.1968-d.1974), Daniel Duval, a French actor, director and writer (m.1978-d.1981) and Dennis Berry, an American director (m.1982-d.1992).

In 2009, Karina married Maurice Cooks, an English professional footballer.
