Atul Gawande was born to Indian immigrants in Brooklyn, New York. He was also raised in Athens, Ohio. There he got enrolled at Athens High School and he finally earned his high school graduation from there in 1983. After his high school, he joined Stanford University with a major in biology and political science. He earned his undergraduate degree from there in 1987. After being named the Rhodes Scholar, he joined Balliol College, Oxford with a major in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). He earned his M.A. from there in 1989.
