At the age of 15, he learned to play the guitar by himself and later began performing at Visalia coffee houses. He wrote his first song, “Collision"; this song holds a special place in his heart. Kaplan joined three singers from Arlington, Texas, and a YouTube musician to form Pentatonix. Pentatonix won the “Sing-Off,” the group has sold more than 80,000 albums. For winning Sing-Off on NBC the band also won $200 thousand as well as a recording contract with Sony Music.
Its first album, “PTX Vol. 1,” debuted at No. 14 on the top-200 album chart, while their Christmas CD, “PTXmas,” was in the Top 10 Debut on Billboard and iTunes Holiday charts.
On May 12, 2017, Kaplan announced he would leave the band via a YouTube video. “All of the things that we’ve accomplished, all the music that we’ve made and the people that we’ve touched with that music -- it far surpasses anything that I could have ever dreamed for my life.", he said in his video.
