Ben Kingsley was born on December 31, 1943, in Snainton, North Riding of Yorkshire, to Gujarati father, Dr. Rahimtulla Harji Bhanji, and English mother, Anna Lyna Mary. Kingsley studied at Pendleton College.

Broadway debut

Following his  London West End theatre debut at the Aldwych Theatre. He made his Broadway debut with the RSC. Later, he played Mosca in Peter Hall’s production of Ben Jonson's Volpone for the Royal National Theatre. He also was also seen in Peter Brook's acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Having started stage performance at the age of 23, Ben made his London West End theatre debut at the Aldwych Theatre in 1967. After almost 15 years into the stage work, Ben made his Broadway debut, finally, in 1971 with the RSC. 

Later, he played Mosca in Peter Hall’s production of Ben Jonson's Volpone for the Royal National Theatre, and also in Peter Brook's acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

After years of involvement in stage theaters, Ben directed his talent to a bit different field of visual arts, i.e. film. He made his film debut in 1972 crime/drama film, 'Fear Is the Key'. Later, he played Dante Gabriel Rossetti in the BBCs historical drama 'The Love School' and also appeared in the TV miniseries Dickens of London the following year.

His major critical success came with Gandhi,  British-Indian epic historical drama film based on the life of the leader of India's non-violent movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He played Mohandas Gandhi, the protagonist in the film, and won his first  Academy Award for Best Actor.
