Bernie grew up in Chicago, Illinois where he was raised by his single mother Mary. Her love and affection build him strength within him but his enthusiasm faded away with the death of her when he was just 16 years old. She died of cancer.

He made his acting debut in 1992 by starring the role of Club doorman in an American criminal comedy film Mo' Money. The following year he acted in the movie Who's the Man?. He has also starred in the movie Friday.
