Bernie Sanders was born in the early 1940s in Brooklyn, New York City, United States. He was born to his father Elias Sanders and mother Dorothy Sanders and his birth name was Bernard Sanders. He is currently serving as the junior United States Senator.

1964

Graduated from University of Chicago

Bernie Sanders joined Brooklyn college, studied there for a year, and graduated from there in 1960. After then he joined University of Chicago and graduated from there with a degree in bachelor of arts with the major in political science in 1964.

1962

Started involving in political activities

Bernie Sanders began involving in political activities from the time when he was at the University of Chicago. There he joined Young Peoples Socialist League and started involving in any political activities. In January 1962, he led a rally at University of Chicago to protest against campus housing policy.

 

1965

Started working at Jobs

After Sanders graduated from the University of Chicago, he began working at different jobs in 1965. At first, he worked as the Head Stat teacher and ten he worked as a psychiatric aide and also as a carpenter. In 1968, he moved to Vermont because was captivated by rural life.

1971

Joined Liberal Union Party

Bernie Sanders officially began his electoral political career in 1971. He joined the Liberal Union Party, a party which was formulated in the anti-war movement and People’s Party. He was chosen as the candidate of the Liberal Union Party for governor of Vermont in 1972 and 1976.

1964

Married with Deborah Shilling

Bernie Sanders married his first wife Deborah Shilling in 1964. They first met at college in 1963 and started dating each other and got married in 1963. Their marriage couldn't lasts more than 2 years and they got divorced in 1966, and also didn’t have any children.

1988

Married with Jane O’Meara Driscoll

Bernie Sanders got married to his second wife Jane O’Meara Driscoll in 1988. The couple is together since their marriage and they are blessed with three children: Dave Driscoll, Carina Driscoll and Heather Titus, and also they currently have seven grandchildren.

Formed Our Revolution

Bernie Sanders founded an organization named Our Revolution in August 2016. This organization helps to educate voters about political issues. It has helped many people to get involved in the political parties process and also has supported many candidates for local, state and national office.

Bernie Sanders married his college girlfriend, Deborah Shiling in 1964. They didn’t have any children and their marriage didn’t last more than 2 years. After that, he briefly dated his girlfriend Susan Campbell Mott and the couple has a son Levi Sanders together from their relationship.  

He married his second wife Jane O’Meara Driscoll in 1988, Jane gave birth to three children: Dave Driscoll, Carina Driscoll and Heather Titus and the couple also have seven grandchildren.

Born and raised in the Brooklyn, New York City, Bernie graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964. As a student, he was an active protest organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality. He also organized protests for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during the African-American Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968). 

Sanders also ran third-party campaigns for governor and the U.S. senator in the early to mid-1970s after settling in Vermont in 1968. His campaigns for governor and senator were unsuccessful. He then stood for the mayor of Burlington, Vermont's most populous city, which he won by a margin of ten votes, and he went on to be reelected as the Burlington's major for another three times.

He was elected to represent Vermont in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990. He then co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a membership organization within the Democratic Congressional Caucus, in 1991. In 2006, Bernie was elected to the U.S. Senate succeeding Senator Jim Jeffords, and the election of the United States Senate in Vermont was held on November 7, 2006. In 2012, he was reelected with 71% of popular vote to his name. 

On April 30, 2015, Bernie announced his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination and on July 12, 2016, he endorsed Hilary Clinton in the Presidential election, which turned out unsuccessful against Republican Donald Trump.

Besides a successful politician, Bernie is also an author of several books such as Bernie Sanders Guide to Political Revolution (2017), Our Revolution (2016), Outsider in the House (1997), and so on. His 1997's memoir Outsider in the House was re-released in 2015 as Outsider in the White House
