Born in Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois

Chaka was born as Yvette Marie Stevens on the laps of Charles Stevens and Sandra Coleman. She was born in middle class family in Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois of United States of America. She is an American and is black.

1964

Formed a girl group, the Crystalettes

Chaka began her interest in music after her grandmother introduced her to jazz. When she was 11, she formed a girl group, the Crystalettes with her sister Taka. In her early teens, she was attracted towards rhythm and blues music.

1967

Joined Black Panther Party

In 1967, she joined Black Panther Party but she left them in 1969 and she began singing with the small groups somewhere in Chicago. She received her formal education from Calumet High School and Kenwood High School but she also quit her high school study in 1969.

1972

Joined new group called Rufus

She also performed with the local band in the early 1970s and then she joined new group called Rufus in 1972. In the 1970, she was asked to join Baby Huey & the Babysitters but this band was disbanded in 1971. 

July 18 , 1973

Released their debut album, Rufus

After signing a recording contract with ABC Records in 1973, they began recording their debut album. They also released their eponymous debut album on 18th of July 1973 and it was released under the title, Rufus. 

1970

Married to Hassan Khan

In the late 1960s, Chaka began her romantic love affairs with Hassan Khan. She dated him as her boyfriend however; she had on and off relation with him several times. Finally in 1970, she got married to him. They got divorced in 1971.

1973

First child, Milini Khan

Few months later after she got divorced with her first husband, she was seen with Rahsaan Morris. She also became pregnant for the first time in her life with him and she finally gave birth to her first child, Milini Khan in 1973.

Married to Richard Holland

On 14th of August 1976, Chaka got married to Richard Holland. Richard is a production designer and an art director. They also welcomed their first child together in 1979 and they got divorced in 1980. The actual reason why they got divorced is unknown.
