After completing his lower secondary education, he joined Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied anthropology, archaeology, and history. He graduated in 1970 with a 2.2 Bachelor of Arts degree. He also completed Masters of Arts Degree from Cambridge. Furthermore, he attended University of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he studied the Welsh Language.
Charles began his career by serving in the Royal Navy and Air Force. He also took the training of jet pilot at the Royal Air Force College in Cranwell. He also attended Royal Naval College Dartmouth for a six-week instructional class.
