In 2002, Chris Hughes was a freshman at Harvard University where he met Mark Zuckerberg. Mark was working in the early stage of Facebook and Chris become unofficially beta testing and product suggestions at the time.

Chris was also a key driver in developing Facebook's popular features and he was one who argued not to open facebook only for school but to the outside world by which he became the de facto Facebook spokesperson. 

In 2004, Chris along with his colleagues Mark and Moskovitz went to Palo Alto for summer vacation. Mark and Moskovitz decided to quit their studies and remain in Palo Alto but Chris decided to return and continue his studies. 

In 2006, Chris Hughes completed his bachelor's degree in history and literature and relocated with Mark and Moskovitz in Palo Alto and started involving in Facebook again. After a year, Hughes left Facebook and started volunteer for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. 

Later, Chris became the executive director of Jumo, which is a non-profit organization aims to help people find ways to help the world. After then, he was appointed for 17-member High-Level Commission in order to support for effective HIV prevention programmes. 

In 2012, Chris purchased a majority of stake in The New Republic magazine and became the publisher and executive chairman as well as served as editor-in-chief of the magazine. His idea to make The New Republic magazine into vertically integrated digital media company resulted in resignation by dozens of staff. 

After four years of an unsuccessful run of The New Republic magazine, Chris Hughes sold the venture to Oregon publisher's Win McCormack on 26th February 2016. He told that he underestimated the difficulty of transitioning and old traditional magazine into a completely digital media company.  

Moving towards his personal life, Chris Hughes married Sean Eldridge who is political director of Freedom to Marry. The couple engaged in January 2011 and married on 30th June 2012. Chris and Sean don't have any child yet. The couple is living together in New York's 19th congressional district.
