After playing with Colo-Colo, he moved to Real Sociedad in 2006, appearing in 237 official games with the club. He signed 5 year contract there and the deal was €1.2 million. He made his LA liga debut on October 22, 2006.

In 2014, Barcelona signed him for €12 million.ina four year deals. He won the treble and the Zamora Trophy in his first season.
