Colombia Landslide: At Least 17 People Killed and Five Injured

At least 17 people were killed and five were injured after heavy rains triggered a landslide in a remote mountain town in southwestern Colombia on Easter Sunday, April 21.

Five people were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, officials said.

The landslide, which was unfolded early morning, hit at least eight homes and blocked a stretch of the Pan-American Highway in Rosas, which is nearly 630 kilometers southwest of Bogota.

A stretch of the Pan-American Highway that links Ecuador's capital Quito to the Colombian city of Cali has been closed.

According to local media reports, at least 25 other people have still been buried in the mud and debris. Military forces were sent to affected areas to rescue people and help in the recovery efforts.

Rescue workers reportedly have been searching for victims, removing earth and debris with the help of heavy machinery.

Colombian President Ivan Duque took to Twitter to share that emergency services were working to free the road to allow humanitarian aid to the affected area.

He wrote, "Our solidarity to the families of the victims."
