He was enrolled at St. Pius X and St. Patrick's High Schools. After high school, he joined Carleton University with a major in criminology and sociology. Before he earned a degree there, he quit his education from there, and then he began pursuing his comical career. During the late 1960s, he performed in various Canadian nightclubs. In 1970, he appeared in a Canadian television variety show The Hart and Lorne Terrific Hour. He continued his comedy career being a member of the Second City comedy troupe in 1973. In 1975, he became one of the performers in an American late-night live television sketch comedy and variety show Saturday Night Live. Initially, he served in this show as its writer and he earned a salary of $278 a week. Later on, he became on the cast of this show and he became well known as a comedian and performer in the late 1970s. In 1977, he made his feature film debut by starring in the Canadian romantic comedy film Love at First Sight. He played the role of Roy in this movie. He is also well acclaimed for portraying the role of Elwood J. Blues in an American musical crime comedy film The Blues Brothers.
