David McCullough was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. He was born from his parents Ruth (née Rankin) and Christian Hax McCullough.In his childhood, he was very much interested in sports and drawing cartoons.

While he was working in America Heritage, he wrote a history during his spare times- The Johnstown Flood.

After the success of The Johnstown Flood, the two new publishers offered him a contract. His real journey as a writer then started with his successful books. Some his books include The Path Between The Seas, Brave Companions, John Adams, The Wright Brothers, etc. He has even narrated the film Seabiscuit and other documentaries including The Civil War, Brooklyn Bridges, The Statue of Liberty, etc.
