Debra Lynn Messing, born on August 15, 1968, in the Brooklyn, New York City, the United States. Her mother Sandra Messing, worked as a professional singer, banker, travel and real estate agent whereas her father Brian Messing is a sales executive for a costume jewelry packaging manufacturer. At the age of three, she moved to East Greenwich, Rhode Island along with her parents and her elder brother, Brett.
Debra was encouraged by her parents to be an actress. After graduation, she attended Brandeis University where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts, and also gained admission to the elite Graduate Acting Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
