Doris was raised in Rockville Centre, New York. After her high school, she joined Colby College. There she was active in Delta Delta Delta and Phi Beta Kappa. She finally earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from there in 1964. The same year, she was awarded with the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and she finally earned a Ph.D. in government from Harvard University in 1968. In 1967, she began working at Washington, D.C. as a White House Fellow. However, after she published an article in The New Republic about the war in Vietnam, she was assigned to the Department of Labor. In 1969, she joined Harvard and there she began teaching government. There she taught for about a decade. In 1977, she published her first book titled Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream. Her second book The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys: An American Saga was published in 1987. In 1994, she published a book titled No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front During World War II and it earned her first Pulitzer Prize for History. She is also been criticized for plagiarism as she was found using several phrases and sentences from other books in her second book titled The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys.
