He was born on August 17, 1954 in Austin, Texas, United States. His father David Johnson was a whistling enthusiast. He has three sisters who studied piano with him. His family was musical inclined family. He is american and is of white ethnicity.

1991

Won Grammy Award

He was nominated for Grammy Award for several times. In 1991, he won that award for his third studio album "Ah Via Musicom" single "Cliffs of Dover". He won that award in the category for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. 

1974

Joined Electromagnets

In 1974, he joined a local fusion group called Electromagnets. The group toured but didn’t succeed to get attention from major record labels. The group split up in 1977. Prior, he was member of professional band named Mariani, apsychedelic rock group when he was 15. 

1986

His album Tones

He released his first major label entitled "Tones" in 1986 through Reprise Records. The album track “Zap” was nominated for Grammy Award.  He had one unreleased album before that entitled “Seven Worlds” in 1978, which eventually saw an official release in 1998. 

2005

Album Bloom

He released his fifth album "Bloom" in June 2005. The album was divided into three sections with different musical styles, intended to showcase Johnson's versatility. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2006 under the category of Best Pop Instrumental Album.

He began learning guitar at the age 11.  He joined his first professional band named Marianiapsychedelic rock group when he was 15. He attended University of Texas at Austin. In 1974, he joined a local fusion group called Electromagnets but that group disbanded in 1977. After that, he formed a touring trio, the Eric Johnson Group, with drummer Bill Maddox and bassist Kyle Brock. Guitar Player magazine has called Johnson "one of the most respected guitarists on the planet". He released his album Tones in 1986. He earns massive amount of salary and his net worth is 750 thousand dollar.
