He began learning guitar at the age 11. He joined his first professional band named Mariani, apsychedelic rock group when he was 15. He attended University of Texas at Austin. In 1974, he joined a local fusion group called Electromagnets but that group disbanded in 1977. After that, he formed a touring trio, the Eric Johnson Group, with drummer Bill Maddox and bassist Kyle Brock. Guitar Player magazine has called Johnson "one of the most respected guitarists on the planet". He released his album Tones in 1986.
