France Conroy is a native of Monroe, Georgia, born to Ossie Hardman and Vincent Paul Conroy. Her father was business executive of Irish descent and her mother also served in a business sector.
Conroy attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and later moved to New York City to study drama at the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Juilliard School.
Frances professionally started her acting career during the 1970s, with regional and tour companies, and appeared as Desdemona at the Delacorte Theatre in a production of "Othello" with Raul Julia and Richard Dreyfuss.
Her debut movie was the Woody Allen’s 1979 classic, Manhattan; appeared as a Shakespearean. In the following year, she appeared in Edward Albee’s "The Lady From Dubuque".
