Born in Colombo, Ceylon

George Alagiah was born in Colombo, Ceylon. His father is Donald Alagiah and he is an engineer and mother, Therese. His parents were Sri Lankan Tamil and he does have sisters too .He is of British nationality and Tamil ethnicity.

1961

His family moved to Ghana

The family moved to Ghana in West Africa in 1961 and he did his primary studies at Christ the King International School. He passed out his higher secondary education from St. John’s College, he did his graduation in politics from Van Mildert College, Durham University.

1982

Worked on South Magazine

From 1982, he started working on South Magazine, until he joined the BBC. He worked there as the Developing World Correspondent based in London and then South Africa correspondent in Johannesburg. He worked there for 7 years in print journalism.

1984

Got married with Frances Robathan

George married his wife Frances Robathan in 1984 and the couple together has two children- Adam and Matthew. He is never rumored to be engaged in the extramarital affair. He has a solid relation like with his wife and is having a stable married life.

1989

Joined BBC

He was the co-presenter of BBC Six O’clock news and later he solely presented the program since December 3, 2007. His contributions have been honored with different awards like Amnesty International UK Media Awards, Best International report, the Asian Awards, etc.

October 28 , 2015

Successfully recovered colorectal cancer

On 17 April 2014, it was announced that he was being treated for colorectal cancer. On June 28, he announced on Twitter about his encouraging progress and his cancer treatment was officially over on 28 October 2015.He returned back to the BBC on 10 November.

George married his wife Frances Robathan in 1984 and together they have two children- Adam and Matthew. He is never rumored to be engaged in an extra marital affair and is having a stable married life. He is of Sri Lankan nationality and Tamil ethnicity.
