Gerrit Alan was born as Gerrit Alan Cole on 8 September 1990 to Sharon Cole and Mark Cole in Newport Beach, California, United States. Gerrit Alan was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the first overall selection in the 2011 MLB draft. The Pirates promoted Cole to the major leagues.
