Borger was married to Lance Morgan. Lance Morgan is a public relations executive. As a married couple, they also had a child together, a son named Evan Morgan. Borger's only child, Evan is married to Mary Anne Huntsman, the daughter of former Utah governor and Republican presidential hopeful John Huntsman and wife Mary Kaye.

Borger was born and raised in New Rochelle, New York. There she attended New Rochelle High School and finally graduated from there. After that, she joined Colgate University and graduated from there in 1974.
Borger began her career, working at CNBC’s Capital Report as its co-anchor. She also appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation. At the end of the 1970s, she covered the stories about the Three Mile Island event. After that, she worked at US News and World Report Magazine as its editor and columnist. She has been working for CNN News since 2007.
In 2008, Borger was a member of CNN's Peabody Award-winning team for the 2008 Presidential Primary campaigns and debates coverage. In 2012, Borger and her team were awarded a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Live Coverage for CNN's 2012 US election night coverage. In 2013, she covered a story, Marriage Warriors: Showdown at the Supreme Court for which she received a National Headliners Award.
