Goldie Hawn reveals why she and Kurt Russell never married despite their 33-year-old relationship

On Monday, while making an appearance on the UK’s ITV talk show "Loose Women", Goldie Hawn revealed why she and her partner Kurt Russell never married despite staying in a relationship for 33 years and sharing a 30-year-old son, Wyatt Russell

"We would have been long divorced if we'd been married. Marriage is an interesting, psychological thing. If you need to feel bound to someone, then it's important to be married,"  the 70-year-old actress said. "If you have independence, if you have enough money and enough sense of independence and you like your independence, there is something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions.”

"For me, I chose to stay, and Kurt chose to stay, unmarried. And we liked the choice," Hawn added "After all these years, you think, 'Why would we? Is it not working? What is marriage gonna do? What does it promise you?'"

When asked how much time should a couple spend with each other in order to maintain a healthy relationship, Hawn replied, “In a healthy, longer term relationship, I would say it’s great to be together about 68 percent of the time,”

While talking to Porter Magazine last year, Hawn told, "A lasting relationship isn't about marriage. It's about compatibility and communication. And you both need to want it to work. If one person does not want it to work, it isn't going to work."

"It's also about not losing yourself in each other," she continued. "Being together, two pillars holding up the house and the roof, and being different, not having to agree on everything, learning how to deal with not agreeing. Everything's a choice."

Both Hawn and Russell were married prior to their relationship. While Hawn has been married twice — first to Bill Hudson from 1976 to 1982 and then to Gus Trikonis from 1969 to 1976, Russell, on the other hand, has tied the knot only once in his life — with Season Hubley from 1979 to 1983.
