VanderWaal went to Suffern, New York, the United States, where she lived with her father and mother along with her siblings. Before she enrolled in online courses for a 7th grade, she became the winner of America's Got Talent. Later, she returned back to attend a public school for 8th grade.
VanderWaal started her musical career by posting videos of her original songs and covers on YouTube. At her early age, she also performed at open mic nights near her hometown. At the age of 12, she became the winner of the eleventh season of the NBC television competition show America's Got Talent (AGT).
In the same year, VanderWaal released her first EP Perfectly Imperfect, on the Columbia Records label. She has also performed at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, and during the opening, and closing of the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria, and Madison Square Garden.
Recently, VanderWaal released her full-length album Just the Beginning, which rose her to fame. Apart from this, she is the winner of Radio Disney Music Award under the category of Best New Artist. She has also won a Teen Choice Award.
