Talented and industrious, Herbert Block (Herblock) was born Herbert Lawrence Block at the end of 1909 in Chicago, Illinois, United States of America to Theresa Lupe Block and David Julian Block. His father was a chemist and electrical engineer. He was of Jewish and Catholic descent.

1927

Joined Lake Forest College

When Block was aged 11, he joined Art Institute of Chicago. While he was in his high school, he was nicknamed as Herblock. He completed his high school graduation in 1927 and then he joined Lake Forest College. He studied there for about two years.

1929

Was hired by Chicago Daily News

While in high school and college, he desired to be a cartoonist. There he did several cartoons and submitted that cartoon to Evanston News-Index. He was hired by Chicago Daily News' and then he quit his higher education.

1933

Joined Newspaper Enterprise Association

In 1933, he joined Newspaper Enterprise Association as the staff cartoonist. There he became the national idol as his cartoons were distributed all over the United States. He worked there for about eight years and then he joined US Army. 

1942

Won Pulitzer Prizes

 Pulitzer Prizes is one of the prestigious awards in the newspaper and online journalism, literature and so on in United States. He has also won this award several times in his life. He won this award for the first time in 1942. 

1957

Won Editorial Cartoon Award

He has won several awards and honors in his life. In 1956, he won his first National Cartoonist Society Editorial Cartoon Award. He won this award for the second time in his life in 1960. In 1956, he was also honored with Reuben Award. 

1979

Won Gold Key Award

In 1979, he got nominated in Gold Key Award for the first time in his life and he was also honored with this award that year for the National Cartoonists Society Hall of Fame. Half a decade later, he won Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award.

Herbert Block (Herblock) was an editorial cartoonist from United States. He was also an author. In 1950, he published his first cartoon book and this book was published under the title Herblock looks at Communism. His second book The Herblock book was published in 1952.

It is claimed that Block was never married in his life. His nationality was American and he had mixed ethnicity.

In 1933, he joined Newspaper Enterprise Association as the staff cartoonist. In 1942, he joined US Army where he did cartoons and press releases. He worked there for about two years and received his honorable discharge in 1944. Later on he was hired by The Washington Post as its chief editorial cartoonist and he worked there till his death. He died at the age of 81 in Washington, D.C., United States. His net worth was unknown.
