Let's start at the beginning. Nancy's golf career began just after she won the New Mexico Women's Amateur at the age of 12 in 1969. Then, Nancy also became the winner of the U.S. Girls' Junior both in 1972 and 1974.

Shortly after she completed her graduation from Goddard High School, Nancy participated in the U.S. Women's Open where came at the first position in 1974 and again in 1975.

When she was at college, Lopez was named All-American and Female Athlete of the Year for her performance at the University of Tulsa in 1976.

In the following year, Nancy Lopez won the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national intercollegiate golf championship and became a member of the U.S. Curtis Cup and World Amateur teams.

In this way, slowly she started getting attention and finally, she got a chance to play on the LPGA Tour. There she completed a full season and won nine tournaments in which five were consecutive.

 

In 1978, Nancy Lopez featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, a rare case for women golfers, after her record run. She won the Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average, LPGA Player of the YearLPGA Rookie of the Year, and was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year. After winning all these awards, beautiful Nancy shot to fame instantly.

 

In 1979, Nancy won another eight times, and from 1980 to 1984, she won multiple times each year though she played only half-seasons in 1983 and 1984. The reason for playing half-seasons was the birth of her child.

She has three children; daughters named Tori Heather Knight, Erinn Shea Knight, and Ashley Marie Knight together with her current husband, Ray Knight. She was previously married to her first husband Tim Melton from 19789 to 1982.

 

Nancy then continued to play short schedules from 11 to 18 tournaments in 2002 and 2003; she cut back to just a half dozen or fewer events a year.

Nancy Lopez is best known for her three major championships; all came at the LPGA Championship in 1978, 1985, and 1989 consecutively. Nancy was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame too in 1987. 

Also, She was a member of the United States Solheim Cup team in 1990 and was captain of the team in 2005.
