Mary Kom is originally from Kom Tribe in Manipur. She is the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each of six World Championships.

She is also the only woman boxer to win a Gold Medal in Asian Games in 2014 in South Korea. Kom was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. She was nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha by the President of India on 26 April 2016.

Mary Kom's Achievements

Mary Kom is the only Indian woman to get qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics. She was at number four in AIBA World Women's Ranking Flyweight category. She won a gold medal in 2014 in the Asian Games in South Korea. She is the first woman to win that title. Mary Kom defeated Kim Hyang-mi of North Korea in the finals.

Mary was named "Maleficient  Mary" as she has multiple titles in the World Championship. Mary has also won Padma Bhushan and is the first amateur athlete to get one. 

Besides she has won Arjuna Award, Padma Sri in 2006, Pepsi MTV youth icon, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, and many more. There is also a book named Unbreakable that is based on her life published by Harper Collins in 2013. The movie Mary Kom is based on her life.
