Ioan Gruffudd is a Welsh actor best known for his role as Mr. Fantastic in the superhero film Fantastic Four.
He was born on October 6, 1973, in Llwydcoed, Wales. He is the son of mother Gillian Gruffudd and father Peter Gruffudd. He attended Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Aberdar, Ysgol Gymraeg Melin Gruffydd, and later in Llandaff’s Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf during his childhood. Then, he also attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. Later, he finished training in oboist when he was a teenager receiving a grade 8 level in ABRSM music examinations, and played for several years in South Glamorgan Youth Orchestra. He has two siblings, a younger brother Alun and sister Siwan.
Ioan began his career when he appeared in a Welsh television movie, Austin and he went on to the Welsh Language soap opera Pobol y Cwm. Later he played football with Pobol y Cwm football team Cwmderi FC along with Lean Rhys, Gwyn Elfyn, and Hywel. Gruffudd was also active on stage, in school appearances in the Urdd Eisteddfod production of Cwlwm.
Later he worked in Wilde, as John Gray, the lover of Oscar Wilde, he got his first international role in the worldwide hit true story based movie Titan and took the role as the fifth officer Harold. Then he got the role of Horatio Hornblower in the Meridian production of the C.S Forester novels, shown on ITV1 and A&E.
After that, he played the role of Pip in BBC TV production of Charles Dickens Great Expectations, Lt. John Feely in BBC One’s Warriors, and architect Philip Bosinney in ITV’s adaptation of The Forsyte Saga. He also worked in the movie 102 Dalmatians, Black Hawk Down, and King Arthur.
Gruffudd has also played the characters of Mister Fantastic in Marvel’s Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. He was a cast in the movie alongside Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis.
He also gave his voice to Mister Miracle in DC’s Justice League Unlimited. He is also a new male lead, Dr. Andrew Earlham, and in ITV’s new 6-part thriller miniseries Liar.
Apart from that, he also worked in the music video of Westlife’s version of Uptown Girl along with Claudia Schiffer, and after that, he was a presenter at the UK leg of Live Earth at Wembley Stadium, London.
Similarly, he was initiated into the Gorsedd Beirdd Ynys Prydain at the highest rank of the druid in the National Eisteddfod at Meifod, mid-Wales with the Bardic name Ioan.
Gruffudd has also starred in a promotional trailer in Welsh for BBC Wales, alongside Mathew Rhys and Gethin Jones, releasing BBC coverage of the National Eisteddfod of Wales. He was among the star of Wales in a short movie from the BBC to mark the anniversary of the birth of a Welsh poet.
Talking about his personal life, Gruffudd is a married man. He tied his wedding knot with his wife, actress Alice Evans. The couple met throughout the production of 102 Dalmatians, and they got married on 14 September 2007 in Mexico. The couples have two daughters, Elsie Marigold and Ella Betsi Janet.
