Jake Tapper was born as Jacob Paul Tapper in New York City, New York, United States of America to Theodore S. "Ted" and Helen Anne (née Palmatier) Tapper. His mother is a retired psychiatric nurse at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center and his father served as the president of South Philadelphia Pediatrics and associate clinical professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College.
