James Roday was born on April 4, 1976, like James David Rodriguez in San Antonio, Texas, US. James was born to parents, his father Jaime 'Jim' Rodriguez and his mother Irene Rodriguez. His father is a retired Air Force Master Sergeant and was the regional catering manager of the Taco Cabana, an American fast restaurant chain specializing in Mexican Cuisine.

His father was of Mexican descent while his mother was of English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. Roday obtained a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts and Drama from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts in 1997.

The 42 years old actor started his career through stage drama and starred in a various theatrical production that included, Three Sisters, A Respectable Wedding, and several others. 

Later, in 1999, Roday debuted on the big screen through his movie, Coming Soon where he starred alongside the Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds as Chad. The actor has so far appeared in as many as 30 movies. His most recent TV sitcom is A Million Little Things in which he is a series regular. He portrayed the role of Gary Mendez in the show.
