James started his professional career as a footballer in 2006, at that time he played for the Colombian second division club "Envigado" but later in 2007, the club entered into the first division club.
Rubio is the second youngest player of the Colombian team to start his professional as a footballer. David played his first match in 21 May 2006, at the age of fourteen.
Following James signed to the Argentine team, "Club Atlético Banfield" on February 7, 2009, where he scored his first goal. Later he became the regular player of the Argentina.
David Rodríguez scored two goals for the "Banfield" against Archrivals Lanus with his left foot in the final minutes of February 2010, in the game his team won by 2-0. After the match he became the lead player of the Banfield club.
