Carragher began his playing career with Liverpool football academy and made his professional debut in the 1996–97 season. Initially, he played as a full-back. But after the arrival of manager Rafael Benítez, he started playing a center-back, where he found his best form. His contributions to Liverpool club is two FA Cups, two Community Shields, three League Cups, one Champions League, two Super Cups, and one UEFA Cup.
Carragher made his international debut in 1999. He played for England at the 2004 European Championship and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In 2007, he announced his retirement from international football. He temporarily came out of retirement to represent England at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
