She was the eldest and only daughter of her parents and her younger brothers are Thomas (born 1924), Kenneth (born 1925), Jamie (born 1927) and Wallace (born 1929). Her mother who was also an actress.

She made her career debut as an actress, portraying the role of Rio McDonald in the 1943 film The Outlaw. Since her debut, Joanne Russell has acted in many films like Young Widow, Double Dynamite, The Las Vegas Story, and many more.

She has acted alongside Alan Dale in the 1970 film Cauliflower Cupids, where she played the role of Nira DiLaurento. Other films that Jane Russell has acted in are The Yellow Rose, starring  Sam Elliott.

Jane Russell was married three times in her life. She married her high school boyfriend, Bob Waterfield, whom she married on April 24, 1943, and divorced in July 1968.

They had three children, an adopted baby girl whom they called Tracy and later adopted a baby boy named Thomas, whose mother had relocated to London in order to escape poverty from Northern Ireland. They also adopted Robert John in 1956.

She then married to her spouse Roger Barrett on August 25, 1968. Roger Barrett was an actor. He died due to a heart attack on November 18, 1968.

Jane Russell again married a real estate broker, John Calvin Peoples, on January 31, 1974. She lived with him until he too died of heart failure on April 9, 1999.

Later, she died on February 28, 2011, due to respiratory failure. She was 89 years old at the time of her death and did not have any extra-marital affairs.
