In November 1998, Jeff got married to Liz Stelling but they were in love affairs since a long time. Before getting married in November, they welcomed their first child together in September. They are still together and they have already been parents three times.
Soon after completing his secondary education, he joined Hartlepool Mail where he took the job of a journalist. He then joined Middlesbrough F.C. at the end of the 1970s as a reporter. He began his television career at TV-am as a sports newsreader. He then joined Channel 4, Eurosport, and British Satellite Broadcasting and finally took the job at Sky Sports in 1992 covering the news about horse racing, snooker, and darts. He began presenting Sports Saturday in 1994 and later in 1998, this show changed its name to Gillette Soccer Saturday.
