Jim Lehrer was raised in Beaumont, Texas where he attended middle school. He received his high school graduation from Thomas Jefferson High School (San Antonio, TX). He also attended University of Missouri. He received his B.J. from the Missouri School of Journalism in 1956. After he earned a degree from there, he began serving in the United States Marine Corps. He began his journalism career at the end of 1950s. He joined The Dallas Morning News as a journalist in 1959. After that, he worked as a reporter for the Dallas Times-Herald. In 1963, he covered the news about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He worked there as a reporter till 1966 and then he served them as a political columnist for about two years before establishing himself as a city editor. At the end of 1960s, he began appearing at the TV program. He joined Dallas KERA-TV where he worked as an executive director of public affairs. He also served them as an on-air host, and editor of a nightly news program. At the end of 1975, he was hired by Thirteen/WNET New York as the Washington correspondent for the Robert MacNeil Report.
