Jimmy Smits is an American actor famous for his roles as attorney Victor Sifuentes in the 1980s drama L.A. Law, in 1999's police drama as an NYPD Detective on NYPD Blue, and in the 1999-2006 political drama The West Wing as Matt Santos. He was also a cast member of Sons of Anarchy from 2012-2014 as Nero Padilla.

Jimmy was born in Brooklyn, New York to Cornelis Leendert Smits and Emilina Smiths on July 9, 1955. He was brought up in a working-class along with his two sisters, Yvonne and Diana. Smits spent most of his childhood in Puerto Rico. Smits attended Thomas Jefferson High school and later enrolled in Brooklyn College where he got his bachelor's degree in 1980. He then went to Cornell University and got his MFA in 1982. In his youth, Smits was an athlete.

Smits' most acclaimed roles were on the ABC television program NYPD Blue as Detective Bobby Simone, in which he starred from 1994 to 1998. He received two ALMA awards and many Emmy awards nominations. For his Excellence, he received the HOLA award in 1999 from the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors.

Smits was scheduled to host the 2001 Grammy Awards although due to the terrorist attacks and with respect to the victims the show got canceled. He announced the winners through a non-televised press conference.
