Like many other Australian generations, he left for Europe in early 1960’s with his two colleagues. There they arranged an unfortunate freelance 'agency' in Italy (with the grand title of 'Interep') but that broke quickly. After arriving in London, he worked as a freelancer, and then joined Reuters. Then he was placed in the job in the London Daily Mirror, Britain's biggest selling newspaper as sub-editor.
Later he became a chief correspondent and started reporting from all over the world. While working for the Daily Mirror, he also witnessed the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in Loss Angeles during his presidential campaign. He spent the next twenty years being the Daily Mirror's star reporter, particularly on social issues. He was also a war correspondent in Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Biafra.
Pilger started his journey to be a documentary filmmaker with his first documentary The Quiet Mutiny (1970) which he made on one of his visits to Vietnam. Since then he has made more than 60 documentaries. Pilger's documentary films based on indigenous Australians include The Secret Country (1985) and Utopia (2013).He worked at the Daily Mirror for more than 20 years (1963-1986).
Along with reporting across the world, he has written the books including Aftermath: The Struggles of Cambodia and Vietnam (1981), Distant Voices (1992 and 1994), Freedom Next Time (2006), etc. He has also criticized many journalists of the mainstream media. Pilger has spent decades in journalism and has been honored with many awards for his efforts in the journalism field. He was honored with UN Media Peace Prize, Australia, TV Times Readers' Award, British Academy of Film and Television Arts - The Richard Dimbleby Award, etc.
