He was placed in the job in the London Daily Mirror, Britain's biggest selling newspaper as sub-editor. Later he became a chief correspondent and started reporting from all over the world. He spent the next twenty years being the Daily Mirror's star reporter, particularly on social issues.

Saw the Robert Kennedy's assasination

 After he became the Chief Foreign Correspondent, while living and working in the United States for the Daily Mirror, he also witnessed the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy in Loss Angeles during his presidential campaign on 5 June 1968.
