John Singleton Hospitalized After Suffering a Stroke

John Singleton has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Wednesday, April 17. He is under "great medical care."

His family confirmed his hospitalization in a statement on Saturday, April 20.

The family said that the director, 51, had the episode while seeking medical attention.

The statement read,

On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care. We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues.

John, whose directing credits includes debut Boyz n the Hood, which earned him Oscar Award nominations for best original screenplay and best director.

John became the youngest director ever and the first African-American director to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director in 1992.

He is currently an executive producer and co-creator of FX's Snowfall. The show was renewed for a third season in September.

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter,

We are sad to learn the news of John’s condition, but we know he's a fighter. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at FX and his Snowfall family are with him and we are hopeful for a complete and speedy recovery.
