JoJo Smith, 'Saturday Night Fever' Dance Consultant, Dies At Age 80

JoJo Smith, a dance consultant for Saturday Night Fever (starring John Travolta), died at the age of 80.

His representative confirmed his death saying Smith passed away on January 22 at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey.

As for the cause of death, the rep said Smith, who became known as the "Choreographer to the Stars", died from complications from a major stroke suffered in late 2018.

Smith had been giving Hollywood's most notable dancers their rhythm. He was also known as "The King of New York" for his extensive contributions to the dance industry and Broadway.

Born on July 20, 1938, in in New York City, Smith belonged to a dancer family. His mother Anna Margaret Grayson was a Katherine Dunham dancer while his father Joseph Benjamin Smith was a tap dancer and drummer.

The late dance consultant is survived by his five children Michael Smith, Monica Richard Smith, Rocky Smith, Elka Samuels Smith and Jason Samuels Smith; siblings, who live in New York and St. Louis; grandchildren; cousins.

His son Elka took to Twitter to pay tribute to his late father, writing, "Remembering Dad JoJo Smith (1938-2019)".

A memorial service for the late dance consultant will be announced in the coming days. Rest in Peace JoJo Smith!
