While Gruden was 15-years old, he joined Clay High School in South Bend, Indiana, home to the University of Notre Dame, where his father served as an assistant to head coach Dan Devine. When Gruden graduated Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio in 1981. Next year, he attended the University of Dayton, where he was a three-year letterman and backup quarterback for the Flyers under coach Mike Kelly.
After his graduation, Gruden joined the University of Tennessee to work as a graduate assistant coach. Later he moved to the University of the Pacific, as an offensive assistant coach. During his tenure, he trained Scott Lubow, who was second group All-Conference. In 1990, he worked as an extraordinary assistant with the San Francisco 49ers under quarterback coach Mike Holmgren in Green Bay Packers, where Mike Pettine has served as a coach and Aaron Rodgers has played as a quarterback.
Later Gruden joined ESPN to work as a color analyst for their most loved program “Monday Night Football.” During his tenure at ESPN, he analyzed the coverage of numerous football games, which incorporates the 2010 Rose Bowl, 2010 BCS National Championship Game, 2011 Outback Bowl, and 2011 Orange Bowl.
After his successful career, Gruden started working as an expert for NFL on ESPN. He is one of the most youthful to win the Super Bowl. He has also served as a qualified coach and has won numerous trophies. On December 15, 2014, Gruden made a contract with ESPN until 2021 and at the same time, he gave out a weekly award called the "Gruden Grinder" to the best player in the game of that week.
