Joshua was born on 11 June 1978 as Joshua Browning Carter Jackson; he has a younger sister, Ashleigh. He attended Ideal Mini School, making a switch to Kitsilano Secondary School. He studied there until his mother took him to be a commercial for Keebler’s Potato Chips.
His debut movie is Crooked Hearts, which was released in 1991, the very next year, he played the role of Charlie as a musical edition of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Later with the help of Laura Kennedy, he joined the William Morris Agency and got the role of Charlie in the Mighty Ducks.
In 2005, he moved to the UK and debuted on the London West End. He then played a role in Shutter, an American remake of a Thai horror film. During his shooting Jackson met German actress Diane Kruger in 2006.
