Julie, who is nicknamed Chenbot, was born as Julie Suzanne Chen on January 6, 1970, in Queens, New York City, US, to parents father David Y. Chen, and mother Wang Ling Chen. She is an American but is of the Burmese Chinese descent.

Julie Chen's grandfather, Lou Gaw Tong, was a poor man but through a chain of grocery stores became wealthy. With wealth, he also became a polygamist and had nine wives with 11 children. Julie has elder sisters Gladys and Victoria

The 48 years' old received her elementary education at the Junior High School in the Whitestone area of Queens. In 1990, she worked as an intern at the CBS Morning Show alongside Andy Cohen. During that internship, she just answered phones and copied faxes for distribution. In 1991, she joined the ABC NewsOne for one season. She worked as a desk assistant during her time there.

Later, she was promoted to work as a producer for three years after which she joined the WDTN-TV in 1995 and served there as a news anchor till 1997

Before joining the CBS again, she was a reporter and weekend anchor for the WCBS-TV in New York.

In September 1991, while Julie Chen was working as a news assistant for the ABC News, she fell in love with her former boyfriend, Gary Donahue. Her former longtime partner is a television news editor.

The pair dated each other for several years before they broke up amicably.  

With the start of 2000, Julie began having romantic love affairs with Leslie Moonves. He is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the CBS Television.

At that time, he was still in a married relationship with his wife Nancy Wiesenfeld Moonves. On April 22, 2003, Nancy filed for divorce in LA citing irreconcilable differences. 

However, the divorce was not finalized until 10th of December 2004. Turning their romantic dating boyfriend-girlfriend relationship into a marital bond, the couple, Leslie and Julie, walked down the aisle on December 23, 2004, at age 34, in a private ceremony in Acapulco, Mexico.
