Kate was raised in Schenectady, New York where she got enrolled at Niskayuna High School. There she became the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball. Though she suffered a huge blow in her basketball career as a freshman, she had an outstanding career the following year as she rebounded to be among the team's best shooters and scorers. In the 2002-03 seasons, she made a Big 12 Conference record by making 44 consecutive free throws. While she was in UC, she also played for Colorado Chill at the National Women's Basketball League (NWBL).
She began her professional career at Glen Falls Post-Star. There she worked as a writer and then she joined The Ellensburg Daily Record where she worked as a sports editor. After that, she was hired by Philadelphia Inquirer as the Philadelphia 76ers beat writer.
At the later stage of her life, she joined ESPN where she co-hosted the show The Trifecta with Spain, Jane, and Kate. She also co-hosted Will and Kate with Will Cain on ESPN radio. She has also starred in Around the Horn and First Take several times in her life and she has won this show over 19 times.
