Kathy Clugston was born in Belfast,  Ireland on  August 22, 1969. She was raised by her parents in her hometown. When she was eleven, she diagnosed with anosmia. She attended Methodist College and then studied French and Russian at Queen's University Belfast.

She worked as a continuity announcer and transmission director at BBC Northern Ireland in 1996, to announcing for BBC One Northern Ireland, BBC Two Northern Ireland, and appearing as one of three in-vision announcers on BBC Choice Northern Ireland.
