Ishiguro was born in Nagasaki, Japan to father Shizuo Ishiguro, a physical oceanographer, and mother Shizuko. He along with his family moved to Guildford, Surrey, as his father was invited at the National Institute of Oceanography as a researcher.

After completing school level education, Kazuo Ishiguro took a gap year and began traveling through the United States and Canada, while writing a journal and sending demo tapes to record companies. In 1974, he attended the University of Kent at Canterbury, where he graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Philosophy. Later he Joined the University of East Anglia where he completed his Master of Arts in Creative Writing in 1980

Kazuo is considered as one of the well-known contemporary fiction authors in the English-speaking world. He might be not as popular as the American-Jewish professor, political activist, Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel or the Canadian female Nobel laureate and writer Alice Munro, but he has received four Man Booker Prize nominations till date and won the prize once, for his 1989 novel The Remains of the Day.

The novel was also turned into a movie in 1993. It featured Anthony Hopkins in the lead role of an honest butler (Wentworth Miller plays a younger version of the Anthony Hopkins character Coleman Silk in the 2003 film "The Human Stain"). In  His 2005 novel, Never Let Me Go, was selected by Time as the best novel of the year which was included in the list of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005. His another novel, The Buried Giant, was published in 2015. 

Recently, Kazuo received the Nobel Prize by the Swedish Academy award in Literature, describing him in its citation as a writer "who, in novels of great emotional force, has uncovered the abyss beneath our illusory sense of connection with the world."

Kazuo holds dual nationality, Japanese and British, and belongs to the mixed ethnicity of Japan and England. He married his long-term girlfriend Lorna MacDougall in 1986, after dating her for sometimes. His wife is a social worker. The couple met at the West London Cyrenians homelessness charity in Notting Hill, where Ishiguro was working as a residential resettlement worker. The couple is blessed with a daughter Naomi and lives a happily married life in London.
